The PSA Group is aiming for a noise-free car interior

09/05/2019

To design a silent mechanical system despite friction, the PSA Group has developed a test protocol which applies to any new material and a database outlining the noise performance of various pairs of materials.

The goal is “to better understand the materials we use in terms of noise performance and put in place a method which allows us to assess this performance from the design stage of the vehicles”, stated Pierre Charles, tribology specialist. As part of a partnership agreement with Cetim, hundreds of tests have been carried out on various pairs of materials.
At the same time, a digital approach demonstrated that it was possible to reproduce the complex phenomena noticed throughout the tests. Following the success of these tests, the car manufacturer and Cetim are continuing with the studies to optimise the developed method.
