Every year, Wärtsilä, the Finnish engine manu-facturer, gathers its metallurgy experts for a training session in the specific topics relating to the problems it faces. “This is a fantastic period for all our teams all over the world, explains Franck Foissey, materials expert at Wärtsilä. In fact, these yearly training sessions allow us to forget about the monthly videoconferences and to meet each other, face to face, around major topics for the company. For this tribology training session, we naturally issued a call for competition between Cetim’s experts and other international laboratories working on this topic. We wanted a training course dedicated to certain specific engine parts, Cetim best met our expectations and thus won the international call for tenders”.
Very concrete cases
A three-day training, all in English, was then specially designed for a dozen of Wärtsilä materials experts, based on the various proposals made by Cetim and adapted through interviews with the managers of the Finnish, Italian and French teams. “The training was given by several Cetim experts and focused on the specific problems that we wanted to examine, namely lubrication, cavitation and overheating on injection, piston ring and cylinder sleeve sides, continues Franck Foissey. At the end of the training, Cetim’s experts provided us with specific expertise on large-sized valves that we had brought with us and on which surface fatigue problems had been detected. We are extremely satisfied with the excellent level of the answers provided by Cetim’s experts to the very specific questions raised by our materials experts”, concludes Franck Foissey.
